Remembering nothing from the day before, crotchety octogenarian Paul Jacobson must become an amateur sleuth to clear himself as a murder suspect when he finds a dead body in the trash chute of a retirement home. As Paul's snooping and short-term memory loss get him in trouble with the local police, his new friends and granddaughter Jennifer help him solve an expanding list of crimes. Paul finds romance as he struggles to escape a murderer intent on a repeat performance.

Retirement Homes Are Murder Paul Jacobsen Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mike Befeler Jerry Sciarrio Books In Motion Books

I think that I was severely remiss in taking so long to read this book. However, I have read this book now and am delighted.

An eighty-something man, Paul Jacobson, wakes up in a room he doesn't recognize and has to cope. He is told he has 'short-term memory loss.' To be honest I kept waiting for a miracle cure, but, the character remained honest. He has a severe disability...he forgets the last 24hrs. He even forgets faces and names. I actually stopped reading and gave thought to how this disability would affect me and Paul handles it with a rough tone and some sarcasm, in other words, he handles it very well. The book is set in Hawaii which adds color itself.

Venturing out of his room, Paul luckily is placed in the dining room of this retirement home with two other men. One, Henry is a genius with the condition of Asperger's Syndrome, and the other, Meyer, a retired Attorney, becomes his friend.

To make the transition more difficult, Paul realized there was a bunch of used bottles in his apartment so he makes a trip to the trash shoot. When he discovers a body inside the shoot, Paul's life becomes even more fragile. The Detective figures Paul is the killer.

It is up to Paul and Meyer to figure out who actually did the killing before it is too late. Paul also has a family, a new girl-friend, and even Henry giving help.

At times this book was funny, at times it was sad to see how elderly persons lives change as the body slows down, and at times it was a super mystery.

I'm glad I found these books. I have a delightful time of reading ahead of me.

Retirement Homes Are Murder Paul Jacobsen Series Book 1 (Audible Audio Edition) Mike Befeler Jerry Sciarrio Books In Motion Books Reviews

A fast, easy read. Laugh aloud while wondering who actually did the murder. Well written and makes me want to read more of the authors books.
I love this series of books. They are amusing--and frightening in places. It's unrealistic that someone would find so many dead bodies or be present when crimes have been committed, but they are great fun to read--and when Paul is in danger, I can't put the book down!
good mystery, plot moves right along.
the situations paul jacobson gets into are hilariuos and unusual.
they fit together like braided hair.
meyer, henry, and paul seem like men you'd like to know.
jennifer and austin are cool, too.
mr. jacabson's short term memory loss is a type I had never heard of except for victims of head trauma.
it makes the story interesting.
You can't find a better comical mystery writer than Mike Befeler. His stories are so funny and interesting that you can't put the book down until you've finished it. The things he gets blamed for just keep adding up to a list of him breaking the law without even knowing that he supposedly did them. Once you've read one book, you can't wait until the next one comes out. Grab your copy today and be ready to laugh a lot.
This book was funny and entertaining. As a geezer myself, I could relate to the characters and predicaments they got into. It was a different kind of mystery in that you get lost in the antics of the characters more than the mystery of whodunit. In fact, I had my doubts that Paul could ever solve a mystery with short-term memory loss. But the trio of misfits find a way and leave the reader with plenty of laughs along the way.
Mike Befeler's books are great. Being a "geezer" myself, I enjoy his genre of "geezer lit". His characters are well-written and appealing, and the mysteries are engaging, yet not heavy and overwhelming. These books are "good reads" in my opinion!
Looking for some light, quick reading? This is fun, and I'd guess it would make a good "kitchen" book to read aloud, since the mystery doesn't have enough suspense that you couldn't let it go for a day or two. I like how it humanizes nursing home folks, who need relationships, even sex, and having an amateur detective with a short term memory problem actually adds to the humor and his humanity! Well done Mr. Jacobson.
